Company History
Neil Miller and Tony Ferguson founded Border Concepts, Inc. (BCI) in the fall of 1990 in Charlotte, North Carolina as a steel landscape edging systems manufacturer. By 1993, BCI was shipping its steel edging nationwide. Based on its growing acclaim, BCI introduced Iron Edge® galvanized steel paver restraint in 1994 and began establishing itself as “The Green Industry's Manufacturer”.
In 1996, BCI introduced its first decorative wrought iron products, Classic Plant Stands, Deck Drapes® and Shooks™ (Shepherd Hooks), which grew into the high end, decorative Wrought Iron Collections™ (WIC) line. In the year following, WIC began to supply garden arches, fern stands, trellises, obelisks, hanging baskets, wall troughs, and much more. The WIC line of decorative wrought iron products continues to grow and will offer over 200 items for the upcoming 2006 spring season.
BCI purchased a new manufacturing facility in 1998 to house the inventory necessary to meet the burgeoning company's growing needs. By 2001, WIC's growth and the introduction of BC's Best Carts™ resulted in the first expansion of the facility. By the end of 2002, BCI's manufacturing facility had expanded to approximately 100,000 square feet.
BC's Best Carts reputation for quality and durability quickly spread nationwide, and by the end of 2002 the carts were shipping coast to coast. BC's Best Carts™ now offers multiple models of tree carts, nursery carts and retail carts.
In 2003, BCI introduced the Bob Histand Signature Tool Line™, Tomahawk™ Tree Planting System, and BorderMesh™ aluminum removable cargo restraints for flatbed trucking based on its increasing stature as a reliable source for green industry products. Strong growth in each line was supported by escalating sales that continued through 2004.
BCI celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2005 by introducing Holiday Concepts™ and a line of Tracking Trailers / Farm Wagons. Holiday Concepts™ line of holiday products offers multiple artificial Christmas Trees models and the Real Steel Christmas Tree Stands for natural trees. The Tracking Trailer / Farm Wagons line supplies several models of strong, reliable trailers for nurseries and growers.
BCI also introduced a line of quality pottery in 2005, which led to the company's first acquisition, the International Pottery Alliance (IPA). BCI's pottery line now boasts a variety of innovative, exclusive pottery assortments. The acquisition of IPA by BCI combined two reputable green industry suppliers that now offer independent retail garden centers a single source for their purchasing needs. In response to the acquisition BCI purchased an additional 102,000 square foot facility doubling its manufacturing and warehousing capacity in Lexington, NC.

Tied to the expansion of the manufacturing facility in 2005 was BCI’s procurement of a 1300 square feet showroom in America’s Mart in downtown Atlanta, GA. Now equipped to adequately showcase their retail products, BCI open the industry’s eyes to what they were capable of delivering to the Green Industry. BCI’s resulting growth in sales led to the expansion of the retail lines, Wrought Iron Collections, The International Pottery Alliance, and Holiday Concepts, and the expansion of the showroom. With the most recent addition in late 2007, the showroom, located at 17-B-5 in American’s Mart, now stands at approximately 9100 square feet.
From grower to wholesaler to retailer, BCI's product lines cater to the green industry's broad clientele. For 18 years and counting, BCI has built its reputation on quality products and impeccable service. BCI proudly supplies the country as “The Green Industry's Manufacturer.”
